We established Lobuff in 1968, after
we lost out 1st two Labs "Lobo" and "Buffy"
who were tragically killed in an accident. We're a small hobby kennel
on Long Island, we're proud to own and breed English type Labradors.
It's always been important to strive to have dogs that are triple
or all purpose dogs. We feel that a wellbred healthy and sound Labrador
should be able to go out and do any job asked of him or her.
By the late 80's we had had many
champions and dogs that had done specialty winning like Ch's Lobuff
Seafaring Banner and sister Ch Lobuff Tequila Sunrise but keeping
"Baloo"- Ch Lobuff's Bare Necessities CD JH, co- owned
with Emily Biegel - "Tollhouse" Labradors, was a turning
point in our breeding program. He sired more than 50 working Guide
Dogs as well as champions, junior hunters and family companions.
He was a 5 time specialty winner including the National Sweepstakes
in '91 and BOB at Potomac. He won Best of Breed at Westminster KC
twice and was the #1 Labrador in the US for '94 and '95. Through
his daughter Ch Curlee Hill Lobuff Seeone and her daughter Ch Lobuff's
Turtle Dove we've cemented in a type and soundness that define the
Lobuff dogs.
Showing dogs was a family affair,
in the early years 60's and 70's. Col Jerry and Lee Weiss and five
daughters all enjoyed the sport as a hobby. Although Patti, Donna,
Maggie and Mollie and their respective families are animal lovers
and owners, it is Col Weiss as a popular AKC judge and Lisa as a
breeder and breeder/judge who carry on with the Lobuff dogs. As
is the case with so many things "it takes a village" and
the sport of dogs is a prime example.
Today many of the Lobuff dogs are
shown and co-owned in friendship and partnership with Julie Quigley-Smith
at Hollyridge Labradors in Rhode Island. Over the last 8 years,
we've enjoyed many wonderful wins, travels and lots of shopping!
Together we've won the LRC National, LRC Potomac twice and in 2008
Best of Breed at Westminster KC.
Our friend Linda Berkeley - Shoreline
Labs brings another dynamic to the table in her quest for the triple
purpose dog!!! Her tireless pursuit of that illusive "Champion
OTCH Master Hunter" is unwavering as well as infectious. Ch
Lobuff's Working Girl at Shoreline RN is on her way to a CD, JH
and beyond - like the rest of her crew. We had been aware of how
important trainability and work ethics were for Labs for a long
time, because of our involvement with the ultimate working dog -
the Guide Dog. The GDF program and our own became very intertwined.
Our dogs always had the drive and desire to work but were hampered
by a breeder/owner with 3 small kids who didn't always have the
training time and know how.
It was Emily Biegel who started
"Baloo" and Anna Clark who finished his titles - Anna
always felt that like his sire Ruffy, Baloo could have done a SH
but due to a shattered femur the physical demands were too much
and we had to settle for the JH. Another dual Labrador driven Co-owner
Nancy Wolston has the 1st Lobuff SH. Lobuff Major Yeager At Asquam
SH is also a specialty class winner who is on the road to lots of
accomplishments!!!
We're now on board with a plan to
have lots more performance titles. With the kids safely on their
way to careers of their own, we hope that more Lobuff, Hollyridge
and Shoreline dogs will carry CD, JH and SH titles and maybe someday
that MH OTCH. Of course it goes without saying that first and foremost
the dogs will have the type and style that says LABRADOR. We hope
we have a lot of years ahead to try.....and plan to have lots of
fun along the way.
In 2002 bred to Ch. Borador's By
George, Turtle Dove produced a beautiful litter of 8. We were lucky
enough to have 4 champions, all who have won specialties. Females
Ch. Lobuff Hollyridge Puffin and Piper and 2 boys who live with
Diane Pilbin and her donkeys!!! Ch Lobuff Bobwhite at Chucklebrook
and Ch Lobuff The Eagle Has Landed @ Chucklebrook - Beau and Eddie.
Puffin and Piper are proving to be valuable producers and the boys
have proven to be wonderful sires. All have specialty winning get.
After a terribly botched C-Section
at the Commack Emergency Hospital for that 1st litter, Dove's uterus
was left very damaged due to blatant disregard and negligence. It
was a huge heartbreak since she'd prove to be such a producer. Thanks
to Dr Hutchinson and Julie's perseverance, her uterus was somewhat
repaired enough so we could breed her again....though she'd never
carry more than 2 puppies at a time. We bred her to CH Dickendall
Buckstone Zane and had 2 lovely bitches who have done well at specialties
and are wonderful producers - Magpie and Whippoorwill. Then we bred
her to Ch Sureshot Hyspire Impressive - "Travis" and she
had 2 puppies....again we were lucky because they were a stellar
pair. Ch Lobuff Hollyridge Kisskadee and Ch Lobuff Hollridge Osprey.
Bred again to Travis - she produced Lobuff Hollyridge Sure'll Crow
who lives with Tina Barks - Bellwhether, bred to Gordy - "Crow"
has an incredible son called "Thunder".
We plan to continue on down the
road in the future with Dove children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
So far journey has been fantastic, what makes it all worth while
are the great friends we've made and kept along the way.
